About Dr. Shaun Matthews
Welcome to Ayurvedic Healing! This is the website for Dr. Shaun Matthews. I am a medical doctor, Ayurveda and Yoga therapist based in Sydney, Australia. Ayurveda, the traditional system of healing that has arisen in the Indian subcontinent over the past 6,000 years, is my enduring passion.
In 1987 I worked as a doctor in India with Tibetan refugees and had my first exposure to Tibetan medicine, which has many similarities with Ayurveda. Dissatisfied with elements of my training in western medicine, I returned to India in 1992 and studied Ayurveda at Gujarat Ayurveda University and a few years later undertook Yoga teacher training at the Bihar School of Yoga. I have been active in teaching Ayurveda, Yoga and meditation around Australia over the last twenty years, both of which I use extensively in my clinical practice.
I was on the organising committee of the international Ayurveda and Yoga conferences held in Sydney in 2006 and 2009 and am a Fellow of the Institute of Indian Medicine(Ayurveda) in Pune, India.
I have also done extensive training in various complementary medicine therapies including somatic or body-oriented psychotherapy, massage, iridology, Reiki, and reflexology which I use to inform my work with patients.
Dr Matthews’ books
The art of balanced living – The right diet and lifestyle for your body type
'The art of balanced living - The right diet and lifestyle for your body type’, distils the essential principles of Ayurveda, Yoga, meditation and astrology and shows how they can be integrated into a busy contemporary life. It includes stories from people who are applying these ancient approaches to wellbeing in their everyday life, as well as lots of recipes and simple practices that connect us to our healing nature.
Journeys in Healing – How others have triumphed over disease and disability
Journeys in Healing – How others have triumphed over disease and disability, Finch Publishing. The book looks at what we can learn about the healing process from people who have healed themselves from chronic and sometimes life threatening illnesses. It draws from the experience of people diagnosed with diseases such as cancer, HIV, chronic fatigue, psychotic breakdown and post-traumatic stress disorder.
In 2014, Dr Matthews will publish his second book, Living a life well lived – Embracing ancient wisdom through your day, which shows how ancient sciences of wellbeing including Ayurveda, Yoga and astrology can be integrated into a modern lifestyle to great benefit.
